TEMAZCAL TENERIFE
Winter Solstice Walk and Maori Sweat Lodge
December 21st
with Esther T. Siverio

During solstices, I recommend taking some time to nurture your spirituality.
The solstice is one of those special days meant for YOU.
Our ancestors knew this well, using these moments to their advantage.
The Guanches were no exception.
What better way to honor this ancestral wisdom than by practicing it today?
Why?
The first reason is that we cannot stop polishing the light of the spirit within us.
The second: to maintain your connection to sacredness and incorporate it into your daily tasks and relationships—with yourself and others.
This solstice and year mark the end of a complete cycle of 12 moons
on December 30th, which is rare.
This means we will start the new year extraordinarily,
with a new moon right at the end of December.
What does this mean?
We are moving faster through time.
This year, you won’t feel like it’s still December when it’s already January.
Just be aware of time to the extent that time wants you to be conscious of it.
WHAT WE WILL DO ON DECEMBER 21ST
ACTIVITY 1:
Silent Hike to a Traditional Winter Solstice Celebration Spot
Activity: A nature walk, food offering, and prayers.
Departure time: 8:30 AM (Punta de Hidalgo).
The solstice officially occurs at 10:15 AM, so we’ll start early to catch it.
Clothing and gear: Wear comfortable shoes (trainers or hiking boots), bring a walking stick, water, a hat, and suitable clothing.
Optional: Bring a swimsuit in case we can take a swim, weather permitting.
ACTIVITY 2: Maori Solstice Temazcal Ceremony
The fire is the central element, heating the stones of the temazcal.
Like in many cultures, fire symbolizes renewal, life,
and protection from the darkness of winter.
We will light a ceremonial bonfire as a symbol of the light
and warmth returning after winter.
Water will also play an important role in this solstice ritual.
We will hold a very special watery temazcal.
SHARING STORIES
This date was traditionally a time to unite clans, share food,
and strengthen community bonds.
Let’s each learn a myth or legend about life cycles, rituals, or memories
from the Canary Islands—or, if you’re from another country or region,
share a story from your homeland.
Let’s heal and purify any unease or negative feelings.
PREPARATION BEFORE THE TEMAZCAL
Arrive early to help with preparations and learn the ancient terminology and customs tied to this ritual, older than time itself.
Start time: The inipi (temazcal) begins between 2 PM and 3 PM.
Arrival time: Please arrive before 12 PM to assist with preparations, receive instructions, and meet the team.
DURING THE INIPI
The leading woman sings during the ceremony.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own songs, even if it’s your first time.
Experienced participants should know at least 2–3 songs by heart.
Where to learn songs:
There are thousands of inipi songs on YouTube. HERE
Search for "temazcal songs" if you choose Spanish ones,
or "sweat lodge songs" in English.
AFTER THE INIPI
Bring prepared food to share, such as fresh fruit and drinking water. Also bring
a 8liters bottle with water to pour on you after finishing the temazcal. In the finca
there is no water. Thanks
