Listen to this:
I knew, the moment I completed my first retreat of this sacred Lakota Native American rite, that... this was for those who seek a vision, who understand that joining is the beginning of something new and the end of other things.
I’ll be straight with you.
I didn’t need any explanation.
I had absolutely no idea what this Vision Quest retreat was about.
It was just like many other things I heard about back then, when I was 29 and started asking myself those big questions:
Who am I?
Where do I come from?
Where do we go when we die?
What's the meaning of life?
Is there a God?
Why is there so much evil in the world?
You know the kind of stuff I’m talking about.
I’ve always been a woman who trusts
her gut and instincts.
There I was, at my friend’s farm, helping in the kitchen. This elder, standing in the middle of the crowd, waiting for the food to be served, spoke these words:
“A Vision Quest is four days alone in the mountains, where the birds fly.
No food, no water you will take”
I pictured myself as a wildcat hunting
on the savannah.
What an adventure! I thought.
I wasn’t fazed at all when she said no food or water during the retreat.
I mean, why should I care?
My dry throat and bloodshot eyes were waiting for my turn to ask her how to join,
and it felt like forever.
Finally, she asked someone to fetch a bag from her room.
She untied it slowly, three knots—
I counted them.
She pulled out a piece of red cloth,
cut a small square, maybe 5-7 cm,
then took a pinch of loose tobacco,
raised it to the sky, looked at the sun,
then down to the earth, and said,
“For you, Great Spirit, and for you, Mother Earth. Thank you.”
She wrapped the tobacco in the cloth and tied it up with string.
“This is what you have to do
—about 400 of them.-she said me.
.-Bring them to me before dawn the day before the retreat starts, and
I’ll take you to the mountain for your Vision Quest.”.- she instructed.
She shared more, but those stories are only for those who climb the mountain.
I’ll leave it here.
But you know, you’ve got to sign up well in advance.
Limited spots.
